We have yet again lost another truly outstanding member of our club, Tony Bartoszek. Like Dick Schulenberg so
aptly worded it in his eloquent eulogy (please see our website), "Tony was not an out-going person but he touched
a lot of people. He was a genuinely nice guy who respected others and helped to bring out the best in them." Tony
was one of the first members I met when I joined the club a few years ago and while a quiet guy, made me feel
welcome and was one of my deciding factors to join. Since Tony started the popular club contest, "The Annual Tim
Hortons Challenge" we are going to name it the "Tony Bartoszek Annual Modeling Challenge" in his memory and honor.
Since it is now September and the Bills have a week of playing under their belts and the Sabres have started
training camp, it's usually the time to put away the grill and start doing some modeling. In order to help us along
in this venture, we are starting a new contest this month called, "I'm Going To Finish This Kit If It Kills Me".
Like I've said many times before, I have a bad (?) habit of starting kits and not finishing them. I usually move
onto something else that strikes my fancy at the time and several started kits get stashed away and forgotten. Here
is the incentive if you're anything like me. You can pick any subject you want but it has to be between 5 and 50%
complete. Bring it in to this month's meeting for registration (you and your kit will be photographed together -
kind of like a prom picture). It costs you absolutely nothing other than committing to finishing it by the December
club meeting. That's three months to bang it out. It has to be totally finished in order to be eligible for the
awards: a trophy indicating that you're no longer a procrastinator, but a finisher! Along with that is a $50 gift
certificate to Section 8 Hobbies on Seneca Street in beautiful South Buffalo. So far, here are the members who have
registered for this contest and their subjects:
Justen Hanna - 1/48 Eduard FW-190 (not competing)
Nick Carluccio - 1/24 1953 Willys Jeep Pickup
Dan Nethercott - 1/35 Mack Snow Plow
Mark Budniewski - 1/24 1965 Olds Buck Baker NASCAR No. 87
Mike Martinez - German Sturmtiger
Matt Klukowski - 1/25 1962 Corvette
Mike Szaderi - 1/24 Race Car
Me - 1/24 AMT American LaFrance FD Pumper (not competing)
Long time club member, John Doerr, has decided to liquidate his model kit collection. John asked me to tell you
all that if anyone is interested in having them, to please call him directly at 716-713-2879 to discuss any details
on what his collection contains and how to go about getting them.
The club is also holding a model kit sale this meeting as well. The sale is from 7pm to 7:30pm (then the meeting
will go on as per usual). Each kit is only $5.00 each and you can buy as many as you like until we run out. All
scales and all subjects will be there for the choosing. The only stipulation is that you must be a current club
member (dues are paid in full) and it is "cash and carry" only; we will not be "holding" kits for payment at a
future time, so if you'd like to participate, you'll need to bring cash.
That's all I have for you folks this month, so please keep Tony's family in your thoughts and keep on building.

Model Table Round-up for August 2013
I am please to announce five new club members: Dan Nethercott, Nick Carluccio, Dave Safe, David Clark and James
(Skip) Ganger - welcome aboard guys, and we're all looking forward to seeing your work very soon.
I am also pleased to announce that this year's Tim Hortons Challenge was a tie and there were no modeling "losers"
for 2013. So, for all those who participated, a hearty "well done" and drink up!
Unfortunately, due to a technical glitch, the photos from the August meeting were lost, so no pictures this month.
Tom Brown, Jr. entered a 1/700 Deutsche Kriegsmarine (DKM) U-Boot Type IX-C from 1942. So much detail for such a
tiny model. Nice job, Junior.
|
Jerry Fuglewicz brought in a Tamiya Soviet KV-1 in 1/35th scale with "battle damage".
|
Tom Brown, Sr. continued the family's entries with a really neat collection of 1/35th scale modern military
weapons and displayed them on a wall with a base. Beautiful job, Senior!
|
I completed my Hasegawa 1/72nd scale Royal Navy Sea Harrier. The nose gear promptly broke off as I set it on
the display table - Doh!
|
A nicely painted Panzergrenadier figure by Verlinden in 200mm was submitted by one of our members (sorry, I didn't
catch the name). Artist's oils were used throughout the project.
|
Tony Bartoszek submitted his contest entry by proxy via Bob Collignon's laptop computer. He did an outstanding
painting job on the classic Revell kit, "Rommel's Rod Staff Car".
|
Mike Szadek completed the Testor's OV-10 Bronco in the nick of time. He said the kit was really horrible - warped
plastic and gaps all over the place. He attributes the successful completion to his wife's hair dryer; well done, Mike!
|
Dave Krygier offered his entry: the Bandai kit of the Space Cruiser Yamato. Very clean build, Dave!
|
Young Jacob Gadek successfully completed the Monogram Ford Tri-Motor kit. Jacob used Tamiya paints throughout the
build and said the decals were very bad.
|
Matt Krygier showed off a very nice replica of the "Captain America" figure for his entry. Nicely done, Matt.
|
The elder Gadek, Mark, brought in a beautifully done model of a rare subject, the PZL 37B Los (Elk in Polish)
bomber in 1/72nd scale.
|
Matt Klukowski showed us his Tim's challenge, a nicely rendered 1972 Ford Mustang Mach I painted as that driven
by Rusty Wallace.
|
Bob Collignon demonstrated his nicely weathered fantasy tank, the Warhammer Mk II Landraider. Bob said he kept
adding parts to it from "stuff" that he found on his workbench.
|
Tony Gliszczynski brought in a nicely done Revell 1950 Ford F-1 Pick-Up truck.
|
Tom Faith's entry was a Soviet "Aerosan" by Trumpeter in 1/35th scale. Nice weathering job, Tom.
|
Jacob Gadek was busy this month as he showed us another of his projects, a P-51 Mustang by Pegasus in 1/48th
scale. This is Jacob's first attempt at a "natural metal finish"; I believe the lad could give some of us lessons
in this technique!
|
Mark Gadek is also a busy guy (must run in the family) as he brought in a huge Trumpeter Grumman A-6 Intruder
in US Navy markings. Mark said the fit of this kit is "terrible" - couldn't tell by your work, Mark.
|
Frank Blonski demonstrated his beautiful finishing technique on his Revell 1966 Impala. The Aztek Bronze paint
work was applied with automotive "touch-up" paint shot over an Alclad Chrome base. Another modeler who can definitely
give some lessons on finishing techniques.
|
New member Dan Nethercott showed off his passion for construction vehichles (something this club does not see a
lot of). They are all die-cast 1/50th scale models that Dan weathered with A-K Interactive products. Construction
vehicles, like tanks, are never clean and Dan promised to show us how to do this in a future club meeting.
|
Samantha Hanna's Warhammer 40K Razorback is completed and beautifully finished. Sam's only comment was that the
kit "went together well".
|
Justen Hanna is continuing the family trait of fantasy subjects by bringing in his Warhammer 40K Land Raider kit.
It looks like it "went together well", like his wife's kit.
|
Renaldo "Dinosaur" Hanna showed us his beautifully painted Tamiya 1/35th scale Velociraptors that he painted himself
with "some help from mom".
|
Ilya Grinberg brought in some very delicate-looking 1/72nd scale armor subjects: an M3 which he says is a work in
progress; a GAZ-AA and GAZ-MM Soviet Army trucks. Ilya likes to build in this scale and usually has his photoetch parts
custom made in Eastern Europe for him.
|
Mark Budniewski completed his challenge with the 1971 Chevrolet "Racer's Wedge" pick-up truck. Mark's beautiful
finish (as per usual) was accomplished by using Testor's two-part lacquer.
|
Another newer member, Jim Lewis, submitted his 1955 Chevrolet Cameo Pick-Up truck. He finished this one with his
trade-mark nail polish technique (pearl metallic). He also brought in a Thames Panel Truck that he's doing out-of-box
but adding some wood-graining on the floor and window screen to replace the kit grill.
|
Brian McFee showed off his North American F-100 fighter from 1965 in 1/48th scale. Brian used the Trumpeter kit and
replicated the burnt parts on the afterburner cans by using Citadel paint shades.
|
Mike Butry proudly demonstrated his F-5 Freedom Fighter. This is the AFV Club kit in 1/48th scale. Mike painted the
kit in the US Navy's "aggressor scheme" as used by their fighter weapons school, Top Gun.
|
Justen Hanna (is he selling models, or building kits????) brought in another of his beautifully rendered Great War
fighters, the Fokker E.5 with "parasol" wing. Justen stated that the kit was finished out of the box. Tamiya acrylics were
used throughout the build and he used artist's oils to replicate the Fokker-trade marked "streaking" camouflage on the
upper wing surfaces. He also used the same technique to replicate the wood grain on the propeller.
