Greetings and salutations to one and all. We are well into the show season with two shows behind us already, Rochester and Erie PA. Did anyone attend these shows or at least one? We'd like to hear from you at our general meeting next Tuesday.

Here's your chance: if anyone is interested in ordering a club shirt and or name tag, I'll be passing around a piece of paper, so don't miss out! Please don't quote me but I believe the shirts are $25-ish and the name tags are $5. Don't give me that look, Mr. Roberts.

The other day, I had to drop off the model info forms to Larry and I had a chance to check out his modeling area. So, it got me thinking (scary I know). I'd like everyone to share their work area. I'll start off. This my setup which is located in the basement. The left side is my son's spot and the right side is mine. At the moment, he has nothing going on so I sorta took over. I also added a photo of my spray booth which my dad and I built back around 2000. The thing still runs like a champ and out of all the material used, the hood range w/exhaust fan was the most expensive at around $95-100.

Now it's your turn to share. Please send a couple pics to Larry O. with a brief description. I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone's setup.

Upcoming shows:

  • SyrCon 36 - Sunday, October 20th, 2024. American Legion, 5575 Legionnaire Dr., Cicero, NY 13039.

  • Buffcon40 - Sunday April 6, 2025. Knights Event Center, 2735 Union Road, Cheektowaga, NY, 14227.

Happy modeling,

A NOTE TO NON-MEMBERS

IPMS Niagara Frontier is a group of people from the Western New York area who enjoy the hobby of scale model building. We have about 60 members with 30+ attending each monthly meeting. Our club meets at 7:00pm on the third Tuesday of every month at the Williamsville Youth & Recreation Center, 5005 Sheridan Drive, Williamsville, NY 14221.

A typical meeting starts with a short session related to club business. This is followed by "Show & Tell" - many members bring in their current work in progress to share experiences with other members. There is usually at least one model-related demonstration by a club member at each meeting. Meetings are free to the public. If you are in the Western New York area we would love to have you drop in to one of our meetings and say hello. We welcome modelers of all skill levels - from beginner to expert.

Our annual BuffCon event held each year in April continues to be one of the largest shows in this part of the country.

As a community-oriented club we also gather toys each Christmas for the "Toys-for-Tots" program and are proud of our support of this worthwhile program.

A brochure that describes the club and its activities can be found HERE.

To promote greater transparency regarding the operation of the club and the EBoard, action items from the current month's EBoard meeting will be published in the newsletter. These will not be detailed minutes of the meetings, but highlights that the general membership should be aware of.

There are no minutes this month, since the EBoard meeting will be held after the newsletter is published.

New member Austin Stegall showed us his 1/35 Tamiya M4A3 Sherman tank. He used a variety of paints by Tamiya, Vallejo and AK, along with pigments and airbrushed paint for weathering. Austin said he picked the kit because he wanted to make an American tank. He mentioned that there were no issues with the kit, but it took him five months to make it because there was a pause of three months during the build.

Paul Hines decided to give automotive art a rest and paint something else that's always interested him - Maritime art. He displayed three new paintings; "the first painting is a cutter with a direct front viewpoint. I enjoyed everything about this painting - the sky, sail, folded head sail and especially the waves breaking from the bow of the shipand the ocean waves."

Paul's second painting was a "small day-sailer with a single outboard motor. I especially liked the wood cabin and dark blue hull."

Paul's third painting was "a different point of view again, from the deck. The height of the building getting smaller gives distance perspective, and the soft wave ripples give the feeling of movement. I enjoyed simulating wood grain and deck detail. More to come."

Alan Gryfe showed us his 1/200 "Long Prosper Enterprise Co." Wardair A310. This was a pre-finished kit, which he built with no modifications or weathering. Alan said that any issues with the kit were "not possible with a 7-piece 'shake the box' kit." He mentioned that he found it at an estate sale for a good price, and that it's probably an unassembled promo.

Ted Szczesny brought in a Mechanical Master 1/10 RC drift car. He said it's Lego Technic compatible and is sold under the BAV brand on Amazon. No paint was used, and the color-shifting finish is part of the kit. Ted mentioned that some subassemblies with multiple pins (some rotating) can be a challenge to align. He picked the subject because the color-shifting finish looked interesting. Ted said there were 2056 parts and 5 motors in total, 4 of which are high speed (one per wheel). The wheels have inline rollers which allow the car to move sideways; it has no steering, but drives like a tank with right and left side speed controls. It has an analog controller plus app-controlled programmable self control. Sorry we didn't get a good photo.

Ted also showed us his finished challenge build, a Tamiya 1/14 Volvo FH16 4/2 Tractor Truck. It's visible in the previous photo as well. The main color is Tamiya spray lacquer in TS-54 Light Metallic Blue. Ted added several aftermarket lighting kits upgraded with resistors to allow for higher non-damaging voltages, along with several new wiring harnesses.

Tom Petkovsky displayed his 1/32 Revell F4 Phantom. He used a white basecoat along with Tamiya and other paints for finishing. Tom also did some kitbashing of parts and decals, and added some weathering with a pin wash. He picked the subject so he could try painting a camo scheme. He said it was his first use of a silouette vinyl mask cutter.

Bob Butry showed us his Hobby Craft YP-59 Airacomet. It was finished with Aeromaster Light Ghost Gray used as a primer, along with Alclad Aluminum, Vallejo Neutral Gray on the underside and Olive Drab on the topside, and Model Master Interior Green for the cockpit. Bob extended the nose gear by 1/8" to give a nose-up look, and added mild weathering. Issues included squared-off intakes that needed to be rounded, and adding some aftermarket interior parts from leftover resin to make up the interior side walls. Bob said he just liked the look of this aircraft.

Jim Greenfield brought in an ARII/Imai 1/72 Command Tactical Pod (Glaug) with Pilot Kyron. He just got the kit, so no painting has been done yet. Jim said the kit has a cockpit, so he will be modifying the pilot. He picked the subject because he likes Anime from the 1980s.

Mark Budniewski displayed his challenge entry, an AMT 1969 Ford Galaxie. He used Tamiya Camel Yellow for the body and Krylon Tan for the interior. He also added an inside mirror and adjusted the ride height. Mark said there were no major issues other than painting, since the kit is on the simple side. He wanted to build it as seen on the box art for the Tony Bartozek Challenge.

Ron Mikol showed us his '57 Ford Pro Mod, finished in PPG Turquoise and White Pearl with a PPG clearcoat. He also displayed awards for the model from two recent shows.

Justin Schroeder displayed his Academy Hobby Model Kits M997 Ambulance. The base coat is Vallejo Dead Flesh mixed with Black; the Red Cross symbol is Vallejo Red and White, and the body is done in Archive-X Light Green. He added lights in the headlights, cab, and in the back of the ambulance bay. Weathering was done with AK Corrosion Texture and Tamiya Weathering sets using orange rust, soot, sand, mud and rust. Justin picked it for the club challenge. He also used Vallejo Diorama FX Desert Sand for the base.

Tom Brown Sr. showed us his 1/25 Revell 1960 Chevy Impala, finished with acrylics and rattle can paint. Tom said the only issues were that the kit is over 20 years old and so are his eyes. He mentioned that he's working towards a 1960 auto and truck collection. He had a hard time finding five kits, but now he has 12. 1960 was the year he was born.

Tim Jacobs brought in a couple of models: a 1/25 Trumpeter '64 Nova and a 1/25 Moebius '64 Resto Mod. He used Tamiya paints on both, and added a modified air cleaner to the Nova 6 cylinder engine. Tim said the fitment of the Moebius kit was difficult. The Nova is his favorite car.

Mike Butry showed us his 1/48 Hasegawa Mk. IB Typhoon. The main colors were airbrushed with Vallejo Air paints, including off-white and black for the invasion stripes, along with Model Master Sky for the fuselage ID band and wing stripes, and Mig acrylic Light Rust. Modifications included Barracuda Cast interior, wheels, exhaust and nose radiator, and weathering included panel washes, pastel chalk and Tamiya weathering sets. Mike said the interior fought him all the way through - nothing wanted to fit, and when it did, it was misaligned. He mentioned that this subject was for a group build and he only had 2 1/2 months to complete it; he doesn't like rushing, so a lot of issues were due to that.

Julie Carson displayed a Ford Model A Coupe Street Rod made from a Spec Cast Metal Kit. She finished it in Tamiya Pearl Red. Julie said she likes this era.

Tim Carson brought in his Revell 1/8 Evil Iron Trike. He used Revell Mythical Maroon rattle can paint, along with Revell Chrome spray and Tamiya paints. Tim said the kit was a 1970s tooling, and it required stripping the chrome and refinishing with the Revell paint. He mentioned that he built the original kit as a kid back in the '70s. Tim also has a YouTube channel at Box Stock Garage.

There were a few unidentified objects on the tables.

Next, some general photos of the model tables.

Finally, some around-the-room shots.

Thanks to Bob Conshafter for handling the model tables, and Frank Blonski for the photos.
