Greetings and salutations to one and all! Wow, I can't believe that two days after our general meeting, summer will officially begin? Almost half a year gone already! I'll keep it short I promise. With that being said, our summer meetings will be build-n-bull sessions. Bring in something to work on, be it either for our club build or just a regular build, but bring in something to work on. It can be clean up of parts, subassemblies to assemble, BUT painting is not allowed unless it is to be brush painted (figures or detail painting).

Speaking of our club build, we are a month into our Tony Bartozek's "I'm Not a Modeling Loser" challenge. How is it going so far? Where are you at with the build(s)? As for me, I have some pieces cleaned up but I noticed that the back bed of the pickup (quarter panels) seem to be warped/bulged a bit. The back bed is one whole piece minus the tailgate so this will be interesting to correct unless its an optical illusion. It's a straight bed and not a stepside. For anyone that missed out on last months meeting, you still have time to join in as the end date will be our September general meeting (9/17).

Continuing off of the club's summer build sessions, Section 8's build nights will begin on June 25th (Tuesday), from 7-9pm, so please mark it on your calendars and hope to see everyone there.

Lastly, there will be a change up in our demo for this coming meeting. Since Al will be away, Steve Weller will step in and do a demo on "researching" a particular model subject.

Also, the election results appear later in the newsletter.

Just one more thing - if you need to get ahold of me on a Friday night, I'll be here:

That's all for now and I'll see you on Tuesday (6/18/2024) for the general meeting at 7pm at the Williamsville Youth & Recreation center at 5005 Sheridan Drive, Williamsville, NY 14221. Parking and entry to the facility will be in the back.
Happy modeling,

Michael Butry

A NOTE TO NON-MEMBERS

IPMS Niagara Frontier is a group of people from the Western New York area who enjoy the hobby of scale model building. We have about 60 members with 30+ attending each monthly meeting. Our club meets at 7:00pm on the third Tuesday of every month at the Williamsville Youth & Recreation Center, 5005 Sheridan Drive, Williamsville, NY 14221.

A typical meeting starts with a short session related to club business. This is followed by "Show & Tell" - many members bring in their current work in progress to share experiences with other members. There is usually at least one model-related demonstration by a club member at each meeting. Meetings are free to the public. If you are in the Western New York area we would love to have you drop in to one of our meetings and say hello. We welcome modelers of all skill levels - from beginner to expert.

Our annual BuffCon event held each year in April continues to be one of the largest shows in this part of the country.

As a community-oriented club we also gather toys each Christmas for the "Toys-for-Tots" program and are proud of our support of this worthwhile program.

A brochure that describes the club and its activities can be found HERE.

To promote greater transparency regarding the operation of the club and the EBoard, action items from the previous month's EBoard meeting will be published in the newsletter. These will not be detailed minutes of the meetings, but highlights that the general membership should be aware of.

There are no EBoard meetings held in June, July and August.

Tim Carson displayed his 1/25 Jo-Han Richard Petty 1964 Plymouth Belvedere race car. Tim used Rustoleum Satin Oasis Blue for "Petty Blue"; the rest was done with Tamiya paints in both brush and rattle can. He said the decals were shot (the kit was issued in 1974), so he replaced them with new decals from Mike's Decals. Tim mentioned that the plastic was very brittle, and once he broke off part of a wheel just removing it from the sprue, he was more careful. He picked the subject because he's been a Petty fan since he was a kid. The model is one more from the stash along with a different set of Mike's Decals.

Justin Schroeder showed us a Hoth Battle Scene Diorama, comprising a Star Wars Bandai 1/144 AT-AT, AT-ST, and T-47 Snowspeeder kits. He used Archive-X paints in ILM DS Surface Grey, 1975 SP Letting Grey, 1975 SP Lark Light Grey, 1975 SP Lark Dark Grey, Dark Grime and ILM Armour, and added AK Terrains Snow Acrylic Diorama, Pro Acryl Snow Ultra Fine, Decoart Clear Topcoat and Ultra Fine Snow Powder. Justin made mods to the T-47 Snowspeeder to allow the smoke effect to come out of the engines; he drilled a series of small holes with piping inside the Snowspeeder to direct the smoke out of the engines. Weathering included using a paint brush and a toothpick to make spattering effects, plus the snow effects. His biggest issue was figuring out how to get the desired smoke effect. The diorama also includes built-in sound with audio from the movie scene.

Larry Osolkowski displayed a couple of items this month. The first was some minor progress on the Quaker State Porsche Indy Car kit from last month. Larry said he didn't like the "heat shielding" molded on the floor pan, especially since it had a couple of large ejection pin marks in the middle of the raised cross-hatch pattern. He made some patterns of the areas from Tamiya tape, sanded the areas smooth, and will cover them with some heat shield material from Model Factory Hiro.

Larry's second item was his further progress on the old 1/24 Heller kit of the 1938 BMW 328 race car he's been working on for a few months. The rear axle is completed, and the radiator assembly was finished and installed on the frame.

Paul Hines had two new automotive paintings on display. The first was a 1937 Ford. Paul's comments: "The shape of this car just seemed fit for a multicolor paint job. I painted the front a deep purple, fading to a red, then orange, then into a bright yellow. I think it sets the car off nicely. I would love to drive this car down the street."

Paul described his second painting as follows: "A 2005 Ford GT. The initial picture wasn't all that impressive. I decided to go with a black background with reflections and then added bright white and red flames to accentuate the red color of the car. It adds a whole new level of excitement!"

Al Germann brought in two models this month. The first was his completed 1/25 Porsche 911, 1970/1971 Advent (vintage kit). Al used Krylon rattle cans for the body, interior and chassis, and painted the targa band, bumpers and door handles with Rustoleum Bright Chrome. He modified the coupe body to convert it to a targa top, which went well. Al said there were some fit issues that were not surprising, considering it is a vintage kit from 1970. He picked the subject because he owned a car like this, a 1971 that he bought in 1981. Al mentioned that he's happy with the way it came out, even though he thinks it's not a show winner.

Al's second model was a 1/25 AMT 2021 Ford Bronco. He used Duplicolor paint for the body, and Krylon and Rustoleum for everything else. Al opened up the recovery hooks in the front bumper, and did the seats in two-tone. He added some weathering with a tan and black wash, then an overspray with Tamiya Buff for a dirty appearance. He also mentioned that the windshield wiper was broken in two in the kit. Al said he likes the new Bronco and enjoyed doing some weathering, and it was a fun quick build, taking 3 weeks.

Al also displayed an example of a brick wall from his upcoming demo on how to make them, and some samples of automotive dashboard instruments that are available for a wide variety of cars.

Andrew Van Brocklyn displayed a pair of Space Marine Terminators figures - a Blood Angel and a Sons of the Phoenix. He used an airbrush and regular brush painting with Army Painter paints in an interesting array of colors: Matt Black and White, Brainmatter Beige, Daemonic Yellow, Night Scales, Warlock Purple, Encarmine Pure and Arcangel Red, along with Citadel Lead Belcher and Retributor Armor. Andrew added weathering with Citadel Nuln Oil and zenithal highlights. He said there were no issues with the kit, and the models are some of his latest work.

Tom Roberts showed us his 1/35 Tamiya Walker Bulldog. He used Vallejo paints, and added weathering with sponge chipping and brush scratches. Tom added scratch-built grab handles for detail. He said there were no issues with the kit, and this was his first attempt at weathering with a sponge.

Mike Butry displayed a new acquisition, a 1/16 M8 Greyhound by Takom/Andy's Hobby Headquarters. Mike said this was another vehicle that he really likes, and the pre-order was back in January. He thought it would make a nice birthday gift to himself since the expected delivery date was a week after his birthday. He added that he's really looking forward to building this and seeing what he can add.

Another collection of model magazines were free for the taking.

There was a flyer on the table for an upcoming model show.

There were a few unidentified objects on the tables.

The post-BuffCon pizza party was enjoyed by all.

Finally, some around-the-room shots.

Thanks to Bob Conshafter for handling the model tables, and Larry Osolkowski for the photos.
