...or News from the Nameless One

As has become custom in our illustrious organization, August brings to a close our annual "Tim Horton's Challenge." This is the meeting that separates the men from the boys, (not to offend our members of the fairer sex) and to see who stands tall above all else, (not to offend Bob Raithel.) Months of sweat and toil (except in the case of Bob C.) all come to fruition, with the "W" being the only statistic that matters. (I've run out of offensive parenthetical statements at this point.)

As I'm sure you are all aware, this is the first year that we have tried a team-based Timmy's Challenge with me and our First VP, Bob Collignon, as captains. Each model completion counts toward each modeler's respective team score with the team having the most completions "winning' the challenge and receiving the bounty of sweet, sweet Timmy-Ho goodness. As a captain, I have personally taken a hands-off approach. As my team is comprised of some of the finest and most serious modelers ever assembled in modern days, I am fully confident that they understand the kind of corporal punishment that will be bestowed upon them should we "lose." I have the utmost confidence that they understand the consequences of their actions or inactions and are prepared to face them as consummate modeling professionals.

But, most importantly, I hope everyone had fun! *suspicious squint and "I'm watching you" hand-gesture*

Our Timmy's Challenge entries must be complete and present at the beginning of this month's meeting. Models can be presented in absentia. However, models not present by the time of the role-call will have to be marked "incomplete." This is only to ensure that once a winning team is announced, there is no recount and reversal. At the end of the role call, both teams will have team photos taken with their "W's" and "L's" respectively. If nothing else, this is a great opportunity for long over-due group shots of our ever-changing and growing membership!

On to other business: There are several of us that are assisting the Ira G. Ross Museum at this year's Niagara Fall Airshow. Stan Keysa has been gracious enough to coordinate this. He will not be in attendance this month but will contact those of us involved for a meeting prior to the event on Sept. 10th and 11th. However, as I will not be able to attend the Airshow on the 10th, I will need a docent-volunteer to be responsible for our club banner and literature for this event. This means taking the banner and a small box of pamphlets and flyers from me at this months meeting and making sure that they are used at the show and that the banner is returned afterward. (The returning afterward is VERY important. Some would say the MOST important part.) Please see me if you can help.

Also, the ultra-generous and ever-gracious John Doerr will be bringing a large collection of aviation magazines that folks can help themselves to. John will need help getting the boxes into the meeting room, however, as they are quite heavy.

Well, that's all that I have for now. This month's meeting is, as per usual, in the Harlem Road Community Center basement on Aug. 15th at 7pm. Our September general meeting will be Sept. 19th at the same time and place.

See you all soon!

Notes from the June 2011 Meeting

I, your humble correspondent, was not, in fact, at the July meeting. So Steve Weller took notes and Bob Collignon took photographs and they sent it all to me! Here goes...

John Doerr brought a 1/144 scale F-84 on which he experimented with a burnt metal effect.

Dave Armitage showed his Ghost of Castle Mare shadowbox, which is truly spectacular! Also on hand were a locomotive engine, an antique truck, and 2 antique cars.

Rich Bernecki shared his parents' World War 2 passports and prisoner documents and his Timmy's Challenge entry, a 1/48 scale Trumpeter MIG 3.

John Zaranek brought a 1/48 Revell Su-25. He reports that it needed lots of filler. John also had a F4D1 Skyray in 1/48 scale from Tamiya.

Mark Budniewski showed his Timmy Challenge model, a 1932 Ford.

Tony G. displayed his Timmy's Challenge entry - a 1940 Ford.

Eric Hillebrand shared his 1/16 scale Renault FT-17 World War 1 tank. Eric plans to add figures to the model's display later.

Bob Collignon has added an additional 13 parts to his Timmy's Challenge Space craft model.

Bill Borkowski also showed his Timmy's Challenge model- Apollo 27.

Larry Osolkowski's Timmy Challenge model is a Mercedes. He had an unfortunate paint disaster and will have to re-do the finish. Time's getting short, Larry!

Mark Gadek brought in his 1/48 scale Monogram Me-410.

Dave Schwab finished his Dr. Strangelove figure in monochromatic gray to simulate the movie poster.

SMike Martinez showed his Hanomag Sd 251. He advises modelers not to boil tracks. (I wonder what that was about?) He also got a Visible Woman at a garage sale for $2.00! I'll leave the comments to the reader's imagination.

Justen Hanna has made great progress on his 1/48 DML Me-163 Komet.

Jacob Gadek's Mummy kit is assembled and ready for painting. His Timmy's Challenge model is a 1/48 scale Mitsubishi Zero.

Frank Blonski brought his Timmy Challenge entry - a Shelby Cobra.

John Zachritz brought a Revell Snaptite Jurrasic Park Velociraptor model. He also showed models of Gundam Alien, Jet and Enki. Don't know what that last one is, but it's what Steve wrote down.

Brian McFee displayed his Timmy's Challenge entry-a 1/32 scale Bell Helicopter.

Dan Marafino's Timmy Challenge model entry is a 1/32 scale Me-109 by Eduard. He also brought a Hobby Boss 1/32 scale f-84, which he reports has a bad fit on the canopy.

Finally, some photos of members around the room and the model tables.

Renewal of our Special Offer for All IPMS Niagara Frontier Members for 2011 - 2012

We had another good year at BuffCon so the Executive Board has determined that we can extend our special IPMS USA national membership support offer for a third year, through the end of April 2012.

We will rebate ½ of the cost for a one-year membership to IPMS USA for new national memberships and renewals. The tangible benefit to this membership is 6 bimonthly copies of the excellent modeling publication IPMS Journal.

Adult memberships are $25.00 per year and Juniors (17 years old and under) are $12.00, so your rebates are $12.50 and $6.00 respectively.

You complete and submit the application (you can get one from Dave Schwab) along with your payment directly to IPMS USA or do it on line at the National website. You will receive a membership card in the mail a few weeks later.

To get your rebate, you just have to show your current IPMS USA member card to Dave Schwab and he will give you money. How simple is that?

The E-Board encourages everyone to take advantage of this offer. It's a good way to get your feet wet and see what IPMS USA is all about.
